The team had to recover rather than rely on one uninterrupted partnership. Omarzai remained the central scorer while the lineup changed around him. Nabi supplied the second substantial contribution, but Afghanistan did not find another player able to raise the total much further. India needed 157 points to win; the speed of its response soon made that requirement look much smaller.
Arshdeep leads India’s controlled bowling effort
Afghanistan added 19 points during Arshdeep Singh’s four overs, and three Afghanistan players left the game because of his bowling. Afghanistan added only 16 points during Varun Chakravarthy’s four overs, while one player left the game. Their combined control limited the scoring even while Omarzai and Nabi were building the visitors’ total.
The figures also show why Afghanistan’s late recovery did not reach a much larger score. India did not rely on every bowler producing the same outcome. Abhishek turns the reply into a short contest

The speed matters as much as the personal total. Abhishek did not merely stay until late and finish on 82; he used 32 balls to create a large advantage in the time remaining. Afghanistan then needed several quick successes to slow India’s reply. It stopped three players in total, but could not create a long enough interruption.
Ishan Kishan gives the leading scorer support
Ishan Kishan made 42 points from 33 balls. His contribution was slower than Abhishek’s, but it gave India’s reply continuity while the leading scorer attacked. Together their totals account for 124 of India’s 157.
The partnership demonstrates why two different scoring rates can work together. One player put immediate pressure on the bowlers, while the other kept the score moving and took advantage of less accurate balls. India did not need every player to copy Abhishek’s pace. It needed a partner who could remain in play while the required score rapidly became smaller.
Three lost players do not stop India
Mohammad Nabi stopped two India players during his three overs, and Omarzai stopped one. Those successes gave Afghanistan brief opportunities to change the direction of India’s reply. India nevertheless reached 157 with seven players still available and 38 balls remaining.
The players at the end only needed to complete work already shaped by Abhishek and Kishan. Shreyas Iyer contributed eight points from five balls, while Tilak Varma was present when the winning score was reached. Their task was not to rebuild from a collapse. It was to avoid adding unnecessary risk after the opening contributions had placed India close to victory.
The series continues in Delhi
The first result gives India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second game is scheduled for September 15 and the third for September 17, again at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Afghanistan therefore has two opportunities to respond without changing venue.
India’s strongest positive from the first match is the speed of its reply and Abhishek’s decisive contribution. For Afghanistan, Omarzai’s 64 points provided a recovery, but the final total did not withstand India’s start. Arshdeep stopping three players was another major reason India controlled the match. The next game begins with a new score, while the first result remains a clear India victory completed in 13.4 overs.
