Frequently Asked Questions

The Live Now section at the top of this page lists the matches in progress with the score as our data last recorded it. When nothing is live, the Upcoming section shows what is scheduled next and Recent Results shows what has just finished.

A match moves to the results page as soon as it is finished, with the final score and the result line. Open the results page and work down from the most recent date.

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game between two teams of eleven. One side bats and tries to score runs while the other bowls and fields to take wickets, and then the sides swap. The team with the most runs at the end of the agreed play wins.

Eleven players from each side take the field. A squad named for a match or a tournament is larger than that, and a substitute may field, but only an approved concussion replacement can take over the batting and bowling as well.

The rankings page shows the current leader for each format and each gender, taken from the latest ranking snapshot we hold. Test, ODI and T20 are ranked separately, so the top side is often not the same in all of them.

Cricket reaches far beyond the small group of countries that play Test matches - the International Cricket Council has more than a hundred member boards. The team database here covers 25 teams, from national sides to domestic and franchise squads.

The live scores page carries the same match centre filtered to matches in progress, with the score, the overs and the current status. We publish scores and data only - there is no video stream on this site.

Two teams of eleven take turns batting and bowling. Batters score runs by hitting the ball and running between two sets of stumps, while the fielding side tries to get them out. Our 24 guides take the basics one step at a time, from holding the bat to reading a scorecard.

Cricket grew out of games played in southern England, and the earliest clear written reference to it dates from the sixteenth century. It became an organised sport with written laws during the eighteenth century.

The player database holds 116 profiles, each with the career figures that have actually been recorded for that player. Use the search in the header, or browse the players page and filter by country, role or team.
