Alastair Cook

Alastair Cook, born in Gloucester on Christmas Day 1984, came through Essex into England's Test side in 2006 at the age of 21. A debut century in Nagpur set the tone for a career built on patience and endurance, but the 2010-11 Ashes announced him fully: 766 runs in the series as England won in Australia for the first time in 24 years.

His captaincy, which began in 2012, brought both triumph and strain. He led England to a rare series win in India that winter and to the 2013 Ashes, but the 5-0 whitewash of 2013-14 and a dip in form put him under constant pressure. His 263 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in 2015 was a statement of survival, and after resigning the captaincy in early 2017 he refocused on batting, making an unbeaten 244 in Melbourne that winter.

Cook finished as England's leading Test run-scorer, with 12,472 runs and 33 hundreds from a record number of caps, signing off against India in 2018 with 147 in his final innings at The Oval. Few players have so thoroughly bent the game to their strengths: left-handed, obdurate, and almost impossible to dislodge once set.

Since retiring from international cricket he has moved into commentary and writing while playing on for Essex for several more seasons. His method was never flashy, but it was durable: defend the dangerous ball, wait for the bad one, and score without risk.
