Profile

About the Player

Mithali Raj's batting was built on stillness at the crease and an unerring sense of timing, both in shot selection and in pacing an innings. She could anchor a chase with dead-eyed calm or accelerate without losing her shape, her cover drives carrying the hallmark of a player who valued precision over flourish. Her longevity ran parallel with the sport's own growth: she debuted as a 16-year-old in 1999 with a hundred, struck 214 in a Test against England in 2002, then a world record, and remained a defining presence for over two decades. Her 7,805 ODI runs are still the most by any woman.

Captaincy weighed on her as much as it elevated her. Under her, India reached the World Cup finals of 2005 and 2017, the latter igniting a national fervour that had rarely touched women's cricket before, and she captained more women's ODIs than anyone else. Off the field she pushed for better pay and professional contracts, her measured public statements carrying the same poise she brought to the wicket. When she retired in June 2022, she left a template for how an Indian woman could lead with brilliance and endurance, and a generation of players who grew up wanting her wristbands and her patience.
