Kapil Dev did more than bowl fast for India; he gave the country its first genuine fast-bowling threat. Before his arrival in 1978, Indian cricket was built around spin, but Kapil's swing and stamina changed the team's character, adding a cutting edge with the new ball and a defiant streak with the bat.

His defining moment came in 1983, when he captained a young, unfancied India to World Cup glory. His own 175 not out against Zimbabwe in that tournament, launched from the wreckage of 17 for 5, remains one of the greatest ODI innings ever played. In the final he marshalled his bowlers superbly to stun the two-time champions West Indies.

An all-rounder of rare durability, Kapil scored 5,248 Test runs and took 434 wickets, a world record when he retired in 1994. Remarkably, he never missed a Test through injury. His batting was fearless and often decisive under pressure; his bowling was bustling, accurate, and dangerous whenever conditions offered anything.

Beyond the numbers, Kapil carried a resilience and charisma that changed how India saw itself in world cricket. He inspired generations of pace bowlers and instilled a belief that India could compete with the best. Every Indian quick since, from Srinath to Bumrah, has worked in the space he opened up.
