Jacques Kallis

Jacques Kallis emerged from Pinelands, a Cape Town suburb, as a teenage prodigy, making his Test debut at 20 in 1995. For nearly two decades he was the immovable fulcrum of South African cricket, a batting machine who combined flawless technique with an appetite for big hundreds. His 45 Test centuries and 292 Test wickets read like a misprint, yet his greatest value was the calm certainty he brought to a volatile team.

The turning point was a match-saving century against Australia at Melbourne in 1997, an innings that announced his permanence. He grew into a genuine fourth seamer, swinging the ball at pace and breaking partnerships when nothing else worked. Trophies mostly eluded him: World Cup semi-finals in 1999 and 2007 were as close as he came, a quiet ache in a brilliant career.

The consistency was absurd: more than 13,000 Test runs at an average above 55, more than 11,000 in ODIs, and 200 Test catches. He remains the only player to combine 10,000 Test runs with 250 Test wickets. After retiring in 2014 he moved into coaching, including a spell with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, and set up a foundation providing scholarships for young cricketers. He was never a player of flair, but the perfectionist who wore bowlers out, and whose presence alone often demoralised opponents.
