Hashim Amla

Hashim Amla's batting was built on stillness. At the crease he seemed to occupy a quieter plane, his head perfectly level, his weight transfer so unhurried that fast bowlers often lost their rhythm against him. That serene technique, coupled with a devout temperament that shielded him from the game's noise, made him one of the most dependable run-scorers of his generation for South Africa.

His numbers tell of relentless accumulation: more than 9,000 Test runs, including the first triple century by a South African, an unbeaten 311 at The Oval in 2012, and over 8,000 ODI runs at a strike rate that kept climbing as he aged. He reached a string of ODI run milestones faster than anyone before him, and his calm presence held South Africa's order together in high-pressure tournaments. Off the field he was a quiet leader, mentoring younger batsmen and letting the bat answer critics who once doubted his wristy technique.

By his retirement in 2019, Amla had become the standard for classical batsmanship in an era of power hitting, revered in South Africa less for flamboyance than for the simple elegance of his run-scoring. He has since moved into coaching, passing the same stillness on to the next generation.
