No fast bowler of the modern era married hostility and beauty quite like Dale Steyn. At his peak, from 2007 to 2014, he topped the ICC Test bowling rankings for a record 263 weeks, taking wickets at an average in the low twenties. Spells like his 7 for 51 against India at Nagpur in 2010 were brutal studies in reverse swing, and he was the fulcrum of the South African side that won Test series in England and Australia in 2008-09, including a match-winning ten-wicket haul at Melbourne.

His method looked simple: a ferocious action, genuine pace into the mid-140s, and a ball that seamed and swung late. What set him apart was the ability to sustain that intensity across long spells and to find life on lifeless pitches.
