Mahela Jayawardene reimagined what was possible for a Test number four, turning batting into an exercise in time and patience. For nearly two decades he was Sri Lanka's oasis of calm in a line-up of dashers, his compact technique and unshakeable concentration allowing him to grind down attacks. His unbeaten 374 against South Africa in Colombo in 2006 remains the fourth-highest individual score in Test history, and the 624-run stand he shared with Kumar Sangakkara in that match is still the biggest partnership the game has seen. Jayawardene was not just a run-machine; he was a tactician who could shift from stonewalling to scoring at will.

As captain across two stints, Jayawardene led with steely intelligence, guiding Sri Lanka to the World Cup final in 2007, where he scored a superb century. He set fields that seemed to read batsmen's minds and stood in the slips with some of the safest hands of his era, retiring with more Test catches by an outfielder than anyone before him. He adapted to the shortest format surprisingly well, and his farewell to international cricket came with Sri Lanka's World Twenty20 title in 2014.

After retirement, Jayawardene moved into coaching, bringing his cerebral approach to Mumbai Indians, whom he coached to three IPL titles, and later to the Sri Lankan national set-up. His influence extends beyond statistics; his meticulous preparation and calm under pressure have shaped a generation of players who learned from him that method beats madness.
