Daniel Vettori

Daniel Vettori was the quiet heartbeat of New Zealand cricket for nearly two decades, a left-arm spinner who could tie down the best batsmen on dead pitches and chip in with gritty runs down the order. He took 362 Test wickets, more than any New Zealander except Richard Hadlee at the time of his retirement, with a looping stock ball and a cunning arm ball that often snuck through the gate. Unlike many spinners who thrived on turn, Vettori's genius lay in control; he could wheel through long spells for hours and hardly offer a boundary.

He made his Test debut in 1997 at 18, then New Zealand's youngest Test cricketer, and grew into far more than a specialist bowler. With more than 4,500 Test runs and six centuries, he joined the small club of players with 300 wickets and 4,000 runs in Tests. He captained New Zealand across formats from 2007 to 2011, often carrying an ordinary side with both bat and ball, and bowed out after the 2015 World Cup final.

Since retiring, Vettori has moved into coaching, with franchise roles including Royal Challengers Bangalore and later a position as Australia's assistant coach. His reputation as one of the shrewdest minds in the game has followed him off the field.
