Virat Kohli emerged from Delhi's junior ranks with a fierce hunger for runs, and his Under-19 World Cup triumph as captain in 2008 announced a generational talent. He was part of India's 2011 World Cup-winning side, rose rapidly through the ODI ranks, and took over the Test captaincy in late 2014, forging a reputation as a relentless pursuer of excellence. At his peak he averaged over 50 in all three formats simultaneously, scored hundreds on every continent, and his 254 not out against South Africa in 2019 remains a masterclass in pacing an innings. By the time he gave up the Test captaincy in early 2022, he had transformed fitness standards and instilled a harder edge in Indian cricket.

His white-ball record is towering: a 2016 IPL season of 973 runs with four centuries, the 2018 ICC Test and ODI Player of the Year double, more than 25,000 international runs and over 80 international centuries, including a record 51 in ODIs. His trophy cabinet holds the 2011 World Cup, the 2013 Champions Trophy, the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, and he finally lifted an IPL title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2025. Having retired from T20Is and Tests, he continues in ODIs, still an obsessive run machine whose chasing skills define an era of batting.
