Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi arrived with a wild 37-ball hundred against Sri Lanka in Nairobi in 1996, then the fastest in ODI history, a teenage blur of raw strength and impatience that left cricket scrambling for superlatives. Back then he was a whirlwind with a bat and something of a puzzle with the ball, not quite a batsman, not quite a bowler.

By his peak, Afridi had remade himself into Pakistan's most watchable white-ball all-rounder. His leg-spin, once raw and erratic, became his real match-winning weapon, central to the 2009 T20 World Cup victory, where he starred in both the semi-final and the final, and to the 2011 World Cup, where he captained Pakistan to the semi-finals as the tournament's joint-leading wicket-taker. The bat stayed explosive, but he learned to pick his moments rather than simply launch at everything.

The 'Boom Boom' nickname captured what he meant to crowds: pure event cricket. After a string of comebacks, he finally retired from international cricket in 2018, then carried on for several more seasons in franchise leagues. For all the heat and controversy, his energy lit up dressing rooms and stadiums, and his numbers, over 8,000 ODI runs and 395 ODI wickets, tell the story of a man who eventually harnessed the chaos.
