Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble emerged from Bengaluru's cricket scene as a wiry leg-spinner with an unusually high release point and relentless accuracy. His Test debut in 1990 against England hinted at his mettle, but it was the 1999 series against Pakistan in Delhi where he etched his name into folklore by taking all ten wickets in an innings, only the second bowler ever to do so. That performance crystallized his reputation as a strike bowler who could outthink and outlast batsmen on any surface, leading India's attack for nearly two decades.

A fiercely competitive cricketer, Kumble finished with 619 Test wickets, then third on the all-time list, and 337 ODI scalps, thriving on pressure with a flatter, quicker style that made him lethal in Asia. He captained India through the fractious 2007-08 tour of Australia with widely admired dignity, and after retiring in 2008 he moved into mentoring, team management and administration. His 2016-17 stint as India's head coach brought a long unbeaten home run, and he later chaired the ICC Cricket Committee. Kumble's career was built on precision, toughness, and an unyielding commitment to the team.
