T20 World Cup winners in 2016, armed with explosive hitters and crafty spinners.
Crowned T20 World Cup champions in 2016, West Indies women announced themselves as a force in the shortest format. Led by the outstanding all-rounder Stafanie Taylor, they upset Australia in the Kolkata final, with Hayley Matthews striking a match-winning fifty as a teenager. That victory remains their crowning achievement in a history stretching back to the 1970s, when the side played its first Test matches.
The team has been built around match-winners: Deandra Dottin, whose brutal hitting redefined power in the women's game and who struck the first century in women's T20 internationals, and Anisa Mohammed, whose wily off-spin made her one of the format's leading wicket-takers. They pushed the sport's elite hardest around the mid-2010s, reaching the 2013 World Cup final and a string of T20 knockout stages. Silverware has been scarce since, and rebuilding has been uneven, but with Matthews now leading the side they remain a dangerous, unpredictable unit, capable of toppling anyone on their day.
