About the Team

Their rivalry with Australia has been among the most visceral in cricket, a clash of two superpowers who traded blows across three decades. When the West Indies ruled, their pace battery terrorised batsmen; when Australia rose, the answer came with equal fury. Those series were more than contests. They were declarations of identity, Caribbean defiance against anyone's presumption of supremacy.

From the late 1970s to the mid-1990s, the West Indies were the undisputed kings of Test cricket, going roughly fifteen years without losing a series. The names echo through the sport's lore: Sobers and Richards with the bat, Marshall, Holding and Garner with the ball, Lara carrying the flame as the empire faded. They won the first two World Cups, in 1975 and 1979, and produced a production line of fast bowlers who redefined intimidation. Decline came fast in the 2000s, deepened by board disputes and the pull of franchise leagues, yet the talent still flashes: T20 World Cup titles in 2012 and 2016, both driven by a golden generation of six-hitters, made them the first team to win that trophy twice. The memory of what once was remains a beacon, and the dream of resurgence never dies.
