Sri Lanka's women have carried the flag for the sport in a nation where men's cricket usually steals the limelight. Playing internationals since the late 1990s, they carved a niche with gritty batting and crafty spin, long cast as Asia's most persistent underdogs behind India and, at times, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The team's spine was built on players like off-spinning all-rounder Shashikala Siriwardene, who captained and mentored a generation, and left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera, whose flight and control troubled batters for years. But the transformation belongs to Chamari Athapaththu, one of the most destructive openers in the women's game.
