Don Bradman

Nobody has dominated cricket like Don Bradman. His Test batting average of 99.94 sits nearly forty runs clear of any other batsman with a substantial career, and it ensures his name is spoken first whenever batting greatness is discussed. In 52 Tests he scored 29 centuries, including two triple-hundreds, and his relentless run-making from the late 1920s to 1948 dragged Australia to the top of world cricket. His final innings, a duck at The Oval in 1948, only underlined the human being behind the myth.

Beyond the numbers, Bradman changed how cricket was played and watched. A self-taught prodigy from a small country town, he built his game on hand-eye coordination and mental clarity, with an unorthodox grip that fed his cover drives and pulls. In the 1932-33 Ashes, England devised Bodyline bowling specifically to curb his scoring, and even that only trimmed his average to the mid-fifties. After retiring he served for decades as an administrator and selector, shaping Australian teams while remaining famously guarded in private life.
