Welcome Reception

Date:   Tuesday 11 September

Time:  7:00pm

Location:  Museum of Science & Industry

Manchester is a city deeply connected with science and industry. From the first steam-powered mill and microcomputer to the pioneering work conducted in our universities today, innovation is the city's lifeblood.

The Museum of Science and Industry sits in the heart of Manchester, the world's first industrial city. The museum is devoted to the development of science, technology and industry and is located on the site of the oldest passenger railway station in the world.

Permanent exhibitions allow you to explore how the Industrial Revolution started in Manchester and transformed Britain’s cities as well as the lives of its people. You will learn about the men and women whose ideas changed the world forever.

The Revolution Manchester

Our reception will take place in The Revolution Manchester Gallery, which encapsulates the city's history of innovation and offers a unique look into the museum's themes, galleries and collections. Showcasing Manchester's rich legacy of world-changing innovations and scientific discoveries, this distinctive and truly remarkable setting provides guests with the opportunity to mingle among some of the world’s oldest and most fascinating exhibits from the fields of science and engineering, including the first stored-programme computer.

You will also be able to access the Textiles Gallery to see firsthand the machines that made Manchester’s cotton famous worldwide.

Dubbed 'Cottonopolis', Manchester was once the international centre of the cotton industry, and Oldham’s Platt Brothers & Co. Ltd. built textile machines for mills across the British Empire. The city's landscape is still shaped by its textile heritage. Visit the Textiles Gallery to watch original 19th century machinery.
